You say Cal, Stanford and Oregon won't accept that alignment...but why on earth would Utah, Colorado, Arizona, ASU accept the other one?

A North/South division does make some sense...not as much as an East/West, but good luck getting those 4 schools to agree to that.

The only thing I would change is it would likely throw Utah and Colorado in the North and Kansas and Kansas St. in the South to retain travel partners.
