Good post. I would mostly agree with what you said. The tradition of 1984 doesn't mean much to kids now. We have the Pac-12, a great coach and a good team. That has and will continue to pay dividends when it comes to recruiting Utah. However, I do think we are still fighting tradition when it comes to TDS -- mostly cultural tradition. It is so accepted that someone will go to BYU that there are still many kids we don't even have a shot at getting. Fortunately, this is getting less and less, but it's certainly still there. The other tradition we fight is family tradition. We've been making some great inroads here in football(see Chase Hansen, Tauni Vakapuna, I've heard rumors we have an Unga on our team as well). In football, it seems like we've gotten lots of family members of BYU players but it doesn't seem like they have gotten many family members of ours since Matt Marshall (Grady Marshall's brother).
Where it's really hurt us is in basketball. BYU is going to have a good portion of their roster in coming years as brothers of former players. Unfortunately for us, most of them are players. So we have no chance at the kids like Haws, Emory and Collingsworth. They are going to be stocked for years in basketball with great players who are simply family members of former players. That hurts us big time, because most of those players are the best players in the state of Utah. We should be cleaning up instate in bball (Pac-12 verus WCC? Come on), but we won't for a few years because of this. Hopefully we can get more Jordan Loveridge-types to come here.
