I completely agree with you that it isn't the easy decision most make it out to be. I voted for Obama 4 years ago but I am very torn.
For me, it comes down to a very simple point, how selfish do I want to be?
I believe Romney is the best solution for the economy. I think he understands the economy and finances better than almost any president or candidate we have had. He did an excellent job with the Olympics, and knows how to run a business better than anyone. Obama is a lawyer/politician, and doesn't understand the economy at all. He represents the public sector, which isn't business friendly. If I want to vote for the person who will make my life better over the next four years, I would vote for Romney, because the economy will be more prosperous and my taxes will be lower.
ON THE OTHER HAND...
The republicans in my opinion have gone off the deep end on morals. They are without a doubt regressing from where things were 10 years ago. Remember that George W. Bush passed the dream act, which gave illegal immigrants the right to become citizens if they served in the army or got a college diploma. Those sound like the kind of citizens I would want, hard working, patriotic, educated Americans. Of course the republicans vetoed it. Reagan even gave illegals amnesty.
The republicans have gone back to the middle ages on immigration, gay-rights, and freedom of speech. In Alabama they have a policy of "self-deportation". Basically that means you treat Mexican-looking people like crap, so that they are so miserable they want to leave. Really? Is that what Jesus would do? Or if you are non-religious, is that what the founding fathers would support? You don't let tan skinned people in the super market buy anything without showing you their papers?
It is also interesting to note the enemy of my enemy relationship with the LDS church and republicans. 80% of Mormons are republicans, yet the republican base has shown more intolerance and hatred of Mormons than any group other than Muslims. It is abominable that Rick Perry's pastor said that Mormons are godless and a cult, yet Perry didn't even have to disagree with those statements.
If I did what my conscious told me, I would vote for Obama, just so I don't have to support the anti-muslim, anti-hispanic, anti-gay crowd that makes up the republican base. I'm not talking about good guys like GarthUte or George Will, I like that kind of republican and would classify myself as such. I'm talking about the Sarah Palin type, which is white-trash, protestant, uneducated, meth-addicted. They are moralists, yet have just as many affairs or gay affairs as anyone else.
