Changing to credit card meters is the best move they ever made

Who carries change anymore? Using the meters when they required change was ridiculous. I was sick of not being able to park legally because I don't have a bunch of quarters in my car, the change to cards was a godsend. I don't like the increased hours or prices, but having credit card meters is a must.

o NEW: Nothing says welcome to downtown SLC, enjoy your stay and please come back like raising the parking rates and extending the hours of enforcement

o NEW: That is what is so dumb. At Christmas, they have free parking to drive us sales, which drives up tax revenue. If it works so great then, why wouldn't it work great ALL the time? Politicians are morons. (nm)

o NEW: And that is the issue that the Downtown Alliance seems to be in denial about. Other than the Jazz games I can't think of anything you can purchase downtown that you can't get elsewhere with less hassle.

o NEW: Such as? I stopped venturing downtown because I felt the dining was limited to Applebees, Olive Garden, Bocco DePepo? Pei Wei et al I hit squatters and red rock periodically, used to hit Lambs

o NEW: Tin Angel too. Flyfishingute--you aren't going downtown regardless, its clear. Where do you go to get the local fine dining and nightlife you crave? Sandy? Draper? WVC? Park City is the only alternative to downtown. (nm)

o NEW: How else can they pay for the millions they spent on upgrading the meters themselves to accept credit cards? Another reason why I shop on line and order food out. (nm)

o NEW: It is the best move they ever made. They meters have already paid for themselves thru increased collections. Soon, if your meter expries, you will be able to extend the time thru your smart phone from a distant location w/o having to go back . (nm)

o NEW: Thats not the hard part; the business owenrs want it so the parking spaces turn over. Otherwise employee and residents park in the spaces and never move. If you don't have pay parking, you dont have any parking. (nm)

GUBA icon NEW: I agree. Currently it is hard to go some place downtown and find a spot to park for just a few minutes to run into a store to get something. Increased parking rates mean that the parking spots turn over faster. This is a help to downtown businesses. (nm)

cbute icon NEW: That strategy isn't unique to Salt Lake--Indianapolis just went through the same transition last year for the same reasons. (nm)

cbute icon NEW: I think Indy's system has been in place for more than a year, so far it hasn't harmed business downtown that much.
