The reality is that we play a 4-2-5 on almost every pass down situation. My guess, without having the numbers, is that we are in that alignment 40% of the time.
I think our best defensive effort was against BYU and that came from a total shift from Kyle's base 4-3-4 defense. In that game, we went from an even front to an odd front, with Star over the center, the two krugers at tackle and Fakahafua and Reilly at the ends. Boo and Filiaga lined up as the inside linebackers. I don't think Boo and Filiaga together are our two best linebackers, but the odd man front creates havoc for offensive lines when you have two dynamic players like Reilly and Fakahafua able to rush from the outside. I also believe that the Krugers are better in this defense then in the 4-3.
We are seeing some growing pains from the young linebackers. However, the inability of them to drop into their zones and prevent deep crossing patterns is the price you pay when you sell out to stop the run. Kyle has stated over and over again that the goal is to stop the run. To do that you need to commit linebackers to the LOS.
