Provo, Utah (June 20, 2005): In a stunning development, University of Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has reversed his decision to become successor to Urban Meyer at Utah and instead become coach of the BYU Cougars. In a room full of boosters clad in blue and several prominent leaders of the Mormon Church, Kyle Whittingham tearfully said goodbye to the University of Utah program by donning on a blue Y cap and saying with tearful eyes. “I’m home!”
Sources close to the family cited the change in Kyle’s heart was mainly attributed to a late night phone call from a reporter from Total Blue Sports. During the interview by an unknown reporter from the site, Coach Whittingham was moved by the reporter’s description of what BYU had to offer Coach Whittingham, and that the reporter had ‘struck a spiritual cord’ that didn’t ring true (until now) to the coach last winter when he made his decision to be Utah’s head coach over turning down BYU’s overtures.
Kyle Whittingham further added. “I didn’t know what I was turning my back on last winter. With the modest pay, great returning athletes, new indoor practice facility, the legacy of the 1984 Championship, the recruitment benefits of the Honor Code, back-to-back-to-back losing seasons and underachievement and finally the expectation to break in to the BCS with our Heisman hopeful Todd Watkins – who’s got to be the best player in America - it took a wise reporter from this great website Total Blue Sports - to tell me what I would be missing out on. Truth be told, I was blinded by the bright lights of the Fiesta Bowl, a crop of talented athletes, conference championships, excellent pay, a devoted fan base, an intelligent and magnificent Athletic Director at Utah, and some of the best facilities in college football. It was a mistake to pick Utah; BYU is where I want to be? I can build things at BYU. Like go to the Las Vegas bowl or something.”
In a related turn of events, current BYU Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall will be stepping down and will lead a new division of BYU athletics. The new department has yet to be named but sources close to the sources quoted above indicated that the new department’s primary purpose will be to “inject spirituality and BYU’s lifestyle choices” in every facet of recruits who choose BYU and will work hard to make creamier an already creamy crop of athletes at BYU.
