If I knew the coaches were recruiting my position, had no scholly next year, and had nothing left to play for I would be losing 30-2 as well. Thank you guys for filling a roster spot this year and giving us fans moments this season.

It seems like BYU to the Big 12 is like Romney to the Republican Party. The Big 12 is parading everyone else as a potential expansion candidate to avoid inviting BYU with the inevitability that they may eventually have no choice but to invite them.

I know that the general consensus several months ago was to look east. Louisville is a definite as #11 if the conference goes to 12. South Florida had its moment as a candidate, then it was Cincinnati, with the latest being Rutgers.
All signs point to the majority of the Big 12 wanting to not look at BYU to fill a conference slot, but I am starting to get a sense that an invitation for them may become inevitable. The longer this thing drags out the more likely the conference resigns themselves to the zoobs.

No small coincidence info is leaked to Chip Brown and Greg Swaim today about BYU and Boise State. Two thing occurred today: (1) The news that the Big East is going to require everyone to vote on raising exit fees and (2) Missouri to the SEC is imminent. Look at the history of how the Big 12 negotiates.
I do not have any information on BYU's interest in joining the league. Just still hearing that they are not choice #1, or #2. They may sneak in on the latest expansion IF Missouri leaves and they concede on BYUtv and make other major concessions (not Sunday play though).

Anyone interested in the Big 12 expansion and how it relates to BYU may want to take another look at this thread.
http://utefans.net/message.php?id=1246577
I'll admit that as time passed I'll admit that I started to doubt my own source and the information Chip Brown was reporting since things started to seemingly change by the day over the last couple of weeks. (Reading the comments by the Utah media over and over on twitter will start to desensitize you over time--lesson learned) (I had also considered the possibility that Beebe leaving was a game changer for the Big 12's expansion plans)
Seems like my source and Chip Brown were both spot on with respect to conference expansion.
It looks like BYU's only chance now might be if Missouri leaves the Big 12 for the SEC. Outside of that I would assume Louisville and West Virginia are the top expansion targets either now, or in the near future.

So much for the thought he was a tireless recruiter. In fact, I think hiring a guy with weaknesses in all three of those areas would have driven our fanbase, particularly those who frequent this board, absolutely insane over time.

If you can't even begin to see the positives of a potential Randy Bennett hire then I can't help you and its time for you to stop posting. Stop trying to bum out the board for what could be a really good hire.
Look at his last five years at St. Mary's. At St. "freaking" Mary's. Pretty impressive given the circumstances.
Throw out the first five years because that was his on-the-job training. Looking at his latter years and his resume is VERY impressive.
Combine that with his Australian pipeline and that translates well for Utah.
Is he perfect? No. But you have to at least admit that we could do much, much worse as a program.
And quite frankly, I am very excited at his potential and prospects of longevity at Utah.

Quite frankly I could care less about finishing at the top half of this conference if we have nothing to play for because we don't win the winnable games early in the season.
Yes, I know I am repeating myself from yesterday, but if we have a coach that consistently loses to the likes of Hawaii, Portland, San Diego, Oral Roberts, etc. our season gets ruined just as the conference games are getting started. And I wish it was just a one or two year problem. No, we have struggled mightily in winnable games since Boylen became the coach. (Not to suggest that Majerus never lost a What the Fetch?!? game every now and then, but they were few and far between enough to be considered a fluke)
Seriously. If we could have defeated Airforce ONCE, Portland, San Diego, and Oral Roberts we are at minimum an NIT team with some things to look forward to next year. Get hot in our last two games and in the MWC tournament and now we are talking NCAA bubble.
I would be so excited about Utah hoops going into next year and having Boylen as our coach.
Instead we have nothing to realistically play for something like the 5th year out of 6.
I'm not a Boylen apologist or a Boylen hater. I'm just starting to not care anymore about Utah basketball. Something tells me that the silent majority on the board are feeling the same.
And when the fans stop caring so does the media. And when the media stops caring the program dies because the general public stops paying attention. That is why I support change. Just so I have a reason to think things will improve so I can start caring again like I used to with this program.

Question for everyone on the board. If we won our winnable non-conference games (ie., Portland, Oral Roberts, San Diego, etc.), finished top 4 in the conference, and got invited to the NIT would your feeling be different regarding Boylen? Mine would

I think Mr. C's argument about finishing in the upper half of the conference is more damning than anything else. Especially when it really doesn't get the Utes anything to show for it.
As a fan I really start to wonder how we had so many bad losses and what a different coach would do with all the talent we know is on this team.
And THAT is why I am in favor of change after this season.
(And for the record, if this wasn't a trend over the last four seasons I would also be more forgiving and chalk up our early season to inexperience)

Here is my problem with being patient with Boylen. I have no evidence he can be successful on the college level. If his name were Mark Few or Brad Stephens I would look at this season and say, "Ok...he is struggling this season, but...
  |
by East Coast Bias
2011-02-27 17:08:29 |
...he has had success at other programs so I am willing to ride this thing out since he has shown the ability to recruit, coach players up, and build a program in the past."
Maybe because I am watching the same scenario play out firsthand at both Utah and NC State at the same time, but I am falling into the camp that NBA assistants with no prior college head coaching experience do not instill confidence with me.
Sydney Lowe and Boylen seem to run the same type of frenetic offense and have both enjoyed up and down seasons. (Add up NC State's record over the last five years and they end up near the bottom of the ACC despite decent recruiting classes that look good on paper)
The damning evidence for both are the wins that come against teams they shouldn't beat later in the season after they have already been labeled as a conference cellar-dweller based on a rough non-conference season. This suggests that the talent is and has been there to be so much more successful.
In fact, I am starting to believe that the bottom half of the MWC is a lot worse than what we were led to believe most of the season. How come BYU can barnstorm through the conference, but struggle early with the likes of Creighton, South Florida, and UCLA?
How come Utah can struggle with Oral Roberts, San Diego, Boise State and then have a realistic shot at finishing 4th in this conference?
I like Boylen as a person, but I am not convinced he can be successful long-term. There is no evidence to suggest otherwise.

And so what if BYU beat Arizona in Salt Lake? Is that really their win they hang their hat on? Practically a road game for the Wildcats early in the season. Outside of that win I think the road games at New Mexico, UCLA, and South Florida (a BYU win mind you) games are more telling. The Cougs are not unbeatable.
I just wonder if the MWC is pulling a Missouri Valley Conference move where the top teams play a lousy out of conference schedule, get their rankings inflated then appear to have signature wins later in the season when they play each other.
Not trying to be a hater. Just not that convinced is all.

I know that Dave Rose would be a coup for everyone on this board; however, he has been at BYU for a looooong time already and has one fewer NCAA tournament win than Giacoletti.
We've seen a number of up and coming coaches get lost at a number of high profile programs because they can't turn things around or sustain success.
I think the idea of getting a home run hire is a little overrated. Too many examples of how the slow and steady approach is what works the best. Anything that is a quick fix usually comes with baggage or worse.
We need a coach and a fanbase committed to building a program. If Boylen is not the guy to do it, fine. But let's bring in the right guy for the long-term.
Hire for the long-term and forget about trying to find the quick fix guy. The price is too steep.

I'm sure Majerus would love nothing more than to have Utah wipe that record off the books for him. ;)
(509 days ago, 0 stars)
Not to ruin the mood, but Utah is right now on pace to score the fewest points in a basketball game during the shot clock era. Down 27-11 at half time. Record is 20 points...
(509 days ago, 0 stars)
Huh...if all I knew about the game was your post I would say we went into half time losing BIG.
(509 days ago, 1 stars)
I disagree. I hope if what is claimed is true the University takes the high road. No reason to unfairly punish those who innocently would be deprived a privilege of becoming a graduate of our fine university.

I have always had a theory that Boise has been the landing place for great athletes who couldn't qualify elsewhere. Anyone have evidence to the contrary?
(517 days ago, 1 stars)
Funny. I was just up in Rocky Mount, VA today which is considered the moon shine capital of the world
(519 days ago, 1 stars)
And even sadder is the fact that some of their third string were once Utes. :D :D :D

I mean it would certainly pay better than my current job, and due to my number of years on this board I could live with the criticism that comes with the job.
(537 days ago, 1 stars)
I could choose some ok players to fill a team, unlock the door for practices, substitute some players when others get tired, and lose to bad teams by 30 to 40 points. Just saying. What is the difference between Larry and I at this point?
(537 days ago, 7 stars)
Unfortunately, Jimmy Chitwood is not walking through that door.
(544 days ago, 1 stars)
As does the Carolina Tarheels. On a side note, EVERYONE also now plays Journey's, "Don't Stop Believing". And quite frankly, I don't care.

Thank you Seniors and Utes for choosing our school. We have enjoyed cheering you on and wish you well. Thank you for your hard work and sacrifices for our entertainment. Go Utes!

I am glad cooler heads prevailed and you edited your original post. Thank you for doing it.

Agree with two points: (1) The coaches put us in this position to compete for a Pac-12 Championship; however, (2) they were clearly outcoached for THIS game. Better team won.
(545 days ago, 1 stars)
Thanks for stopping by little brother. Not move along while we discuss the game with OUR real rival.
(545 days ago, 1 stars)
Stop. Just stop. He is responsible for as many wins as losses this year. We wouldn't have been in this position without him.
(545 days ago, 0 stars)
Arizona State also lost to a WCC school, Pepperdine.
(554 days ago, 2 stars)
Its has to be partly because none of those students have children of their own.
(562 days ago, 2 stars)
This wouldn't have to do with a certain player decommitting would it? THAT would suck because one thing that will get most through the season is faith that help is on the way.
(565 days ago, 0 stars)
Wow...I cannot think of a better way to make me less interested in basketball this year than to watch the Utes play the last minute of that game.
(566 days ago, 8 stars)
I understand where you are coming from; however, if nothing is done to curb concussions then football will die a slow death in courtrooms.
(571 days ago, 1 stars)
Decent move for the SEC. Poor move by Missouri. Especially if Mizzou gets stuck in the SEC East as was reported today. Look at their recruiting...
(584 days ago, 0 stars)
Look for schools like BYU and Boise State to get paraded around as the Big 12's new flavor just to get WVU and Louisville to act NOW.
(584 days ago, 3 stars)
I follow the Utes very closely, but I do not know where the Wolfman thing come from for JWIV. Anyone care to elaborate. Always wondered.
(585 days ago, 0 stars)
And this is why Independence is so much better for that other school and their fans.
(585 days ago, 4 stars)
No. This has been dead for some time according to my source. BYU fell out of favor as soon as schools like TCU, West Virginia, and Louisville came into play.
(590 days ago, 3 stars)
Actually, for his sake I'm glad he got #1 pick money, but I know what you are saying...
(591 days ago, 1 stars)
There was an article posted a couple of months ago from the BYU newspaper where a student complained about Cafe Rio since they used caffeinated Coke in their recipe for sweet pork
(595 days ago, 0 stars)
And for the record, heartless was totally right about Sunday play being a major issue. Need to give him props for calling his shot earlier as well.
(595 days ago, 0 stars)
Looks like the original Big 12 expansion plan may be coming together.
(595 days ago, 2 stars)
John Wilner says it all in his recent tweet about how BYU wants to join the Big 12 just to keep up with Big Brother Utah and the Pac 12
(597 days ago, 2 stars)
No kidding. BYU players major in cheap hits to the head.
(601 days ago, 2 stars)
Think about this for a second, because of the LHN Texas may be giving up Stanford and Cal as academic colleagues for the likes of Boise State and Louisville. Because of the LHN they will be giving up trips to Arizona State, Los Angeles,...

Anyone on here work for Fidelity Investments who wouldn't mind me contacting them to ask them a couple of questions?
(605 days ago, 0 stars)
One more thing to consider...say B12 takes TCU, West Virginia, and Louisville a year or two to join the conference. In the mean time those TV dollars get split between 9 teams and the promise of future additions gives the league stability.
(609 days ago, 1 stars)
What is the one PR move we learned with respect to possible Pac - 16 expansion. Publicly deny any interest if an invite isn't coming.
(609 days ago, 2 stars)
Yeah...no kidding, right? Has Chip Brown gotten anything correct over the course of the last two years? Serious question because I can't think of an example where he has provided accurate info..
(609 days ago, 0 stars)
Exactly. $20 million makes you think about not leaving, but doesn't keep you from leaving. $50 million and above? Now you are talking real money.
(609 days ago, 0 stars)
Well what do you know? Just saw this from Chip Brown who basically agrees with what I heard today. (So much for that information, right?--LOL!) Link inside
(609 days ago, 0 stars)
Don't really see that as a hinderance. $20 Million becomes 1/2 year revenue in a Super Conference. Also, what happens if enough members leave a conference at one time. Need to see details to see if that would void a deal.
(609 days ago, 0 stars)
Let's just say that BYU has turned off some in the Big 12 by overnegotiating their position. Other schools, some would say more attractive schools, are BEGGING to come. The Cougs show up with a list of demands and no real leverage.
(609 days ago, 1 stars)
Question: Is the general consensus with the Utah local media that BYU is a lock for a Big 12 invite? Cause, that is not what I am hearing and I trust my sources...
(609 days ago, 7 stars)
Time to play the back-ups. All that is left is for BYU to bush league one of our players into an unnecessary injury.
(614 days ago, 2 stars)
Question: If BYU fans are not allowed to question Roscoe on his play calling, are they allowed to ask him why key football players don't serve LDS missions? Just saying...

Plea to the Board: If, and its still a big IF, the rumors are true please, do the right thing with BYU and the rest of the MWC. (32 stars)

This season is all about the MWC. I am genuinely happy for BYU and their win. Utah has done enough that its resume speaks for itself. This win doesn't take anything away from Utah's accomplishments but instead enhances them. (31 stars)

I'll keep my comment short. I think many of us forget how ugly some of last year's wins were. I think many of us forget that it took the ball bouncing the right way in a couple of games last season to keep our perfect record in tact. (22 stars)

Two things: (1) This helps the MWC and Utah, and if you fail to see it then you are as bad as the zoobs, (2) Utah will beat BYU at the end of the season making this game a moot point for their BCS hopes. (18 stars)

I'm just glad my mistakes never make national news. Rivalry aside, my heart goes out to the Davies kid. No one is perfect, but this is just cruel and unusual punishment no matter the offense. I sincerely hope that he can put this behind him. (17 stars)
