Does someone have any proof the legislature actually threatened to cut funds? Couldn't it actually just be that Hill and Pershing just wanted a one year break from the series, and decided to reschedule?

    by Mineral Ute
    2016-05-27 10:12:25

Although I wouldn't put it past some legislators to make passing comments about cutting funding, I highly doubt they would follow through.

Yes, the legislature in Utah is full of douche bags (could be the same for any state). And yes, the religious preference of many of the legislators influences them to make a lot of lame decisions.

Although I would rather not play them (because I can't stand them and I like to see them up in arms over the cancellation), it does make sense to play in state games (revenue, travel savings, media coverage and hype).

Maybe it turns out that some legislators really did threaten - but until then some need to put the pitchforks away.

It seems some just can't accept that fact that the U may simply want to play this game.

Does anyone know the status of injured players? I read somewhere that if Utah were to play in the Vagas Bowl, that Covey, Dimick, and Paul wouldn't play (possibly Scott, too). Can anyone confirm this or know what Utah's injured players status is?

Yet another reason to want a later bowl game - more time to heal up.

Travis Wilson and Tom Hackett named PAC12 players of the week (link).

    by Mineral Ute
    2015-09-28 11:37:46

    http://pac-12.com/article/2015/09/28/pac- 12-announces-football-players-week

Wilson, a senior quarterback from San Clemente, Calif., had 327 yards of total offense (227 passing, 100 rushing) in his return to action after missing last week’s game due to injury. Wilson recorded five total touchdowns, four passing and one rushing, in then-No. 18 Utah’s defeat of then-No. 13 Oregon, 62-20, at Autzen Stadium. The senior quarterback went 18-of-30 passing to nine different receivers with no interceptions, and had a career-long rush of 60 yards. After Utah punted on its first offensive possession, Wilson led the Utes on five-straight scoring drives to take a 27-13 halftime lead. Coming out from halftime, Utah scored on its first three offensive possessions to go up 48-13. Utah’s 62 points were the most scored against a Pac-12 opponent since joining the Conference in 2011, and the most the Ducks have ever allowed in Eugene.

Hackett, a senior punter from Melbourne, Australia, had three punts for 181 yards (60.3 average), dropping all three punts inside the 10-yard line (8, 1 and 4-yard lines) in Utah’s 62-20 win over Oregon. Hackett had a career-long punt of 76 yards, which ranks seventh in program history, of which landed on Oregon’s 8-yard line. Hackett corralled a high snap on fourth-and-13 on a called fake punt and turned it into a 33-yard rush to the Oregon 39-yard line. Utah went on to score a touchdown on the possession to take a 48-13 lead. With the statement win, the No. 10 Utes received its first ever first-place vote in the regular season AP Poll.

Has anyone rented a car through RelayRides? It's a peer-to-peer car rental service. I'm headed to Alaska and with 4 kids I need a large car. I can rent through agencies for around $1,600, or get an Acura MDX from a local for $550...

Utah vs. Colorado State 1994 highlights.

    by Mineral Ute
    2015-03-26 08:53:17

Just ran across this on youtube. What a load of highlights packed into one game...

Utah ran the Duck for a 2 point conversion, and again for a touchdown. Their defense forced five turnovers, Kareem Leery had 2 interceptions - one for a touchdown - and of course Harold Lusk with the clinching 100 yard interception return.

Utah's special teams not bad either - they blocked a field goal, extra point and punt (but also gave up two blocked punts).

    The announcement wasn't very telling...

    by Mineral Ute
    2014-12-29 17:37:29

Something just seems off. Yes, Whit is the coach now, but he still may not be a week from now.

That fact that Whit hasn't said anything is strange to me. Perhaps Whit and Hill just can't agree, but this announcement could have been made simply to calm down the donors and recruits for the time being. In other words it just bought some time in an attempt to reassure recruits, and perhaps an official announcement isn't made until after the New Years bowl games, about either a new coach (if Hill is trying to go after another head coach such as Mullen) or an extension for Whit.

La Frontera opening restaurant one block from Presidents Circle on U Campus. . .

    by Mineral Ute
    2011-05-31 09:54:02

In my community newsletter last week (avenues) there was an article about an apartment complex that the U purchased and has recently renovated.

The building is on the corner of 1300 East and 200 South, just two doors down from the pie (the yellowish four story building).

Anyway, La Frontera will occupy the ground floor, where Gandolfos and a skate/ski shop have most recently been (the space that, way back in the day, was occupied by Little Ceasars and the original Graywhale).

Nothing like a couple of smothered burritos after a home game.

    (143 days ago, 3 stars)

Sorry to ruin it for you, but you should know that Merrill Cook lost yet again. He has a worse November record than the Utes :)
    (146 days ago, 1 stars)

Nevermind - that would actually be a touchback.
    (148 days ago, 0 stars)

Or, the defense runs back a blocked kick and pulls a Kaelin Clay at the goal line, with the ball bouncing out of bounds from the end zone. Still will never happen, though.
    (148 days ago, 0 stars)

Do it in person and not over the phone. Otherwise, they will call you once a month trying to get you to buy season tickets, even after you ask them to stop calling you.
    (149 days ago, 0 stars)

Interesting to look at things in that light. Pretty dumb that Michigan and CLemson are ahead of Washington considering the losses. It also makes USC, Colorado and even Stanford look good, as all their losses are to top 25 teams.
    (154 days ago, 1 stars)

Yup - so if Colorado loses this Saturday, then demand on their end for the game against Utah will go way down, which means greater ticket availability. In other words, from a Colorado perspective, if they lose to WSU, the Utah game means nothing.
    (162 days ago, 0 stars)

Yeah, although not a true center, David will fill in nicely for an injured Dielman. But I don't see Sedrick getting much playing time. Although a guard, our O-line is good at that position with Asiata and Uhatafe.

That's great - his presence on the D line is huge.
    (211 days ago, 0 stars)

I highly doubt that he'd take a step down from Head Coach to coordinator unless it was at a big name school (ND, Ohio State, Clemson). He'll be able to get a head coacing gig at a P5 school.

Well, he did say "just saying" about six too many times.
    (214 days ago, 2 stars)

Unless they blow USC out of the water (unlikely), I don't see Utah moving much - their wins will be over three teams that will be 1-3 after Saturday (USC, tds, San Jose), and an FCS team.
    (218 days ago, 2 stars)

true - but their schedules the next two years are brutal. Even if they improve, they may not have a winning record.

Hopefully, we don't throw any touchdown passes to Cameron Smith, either. He caught the ball three times for 122 yards and a touchdown last year. If our offense can neatralize him, he hopefully won't catch the ball at all this game.

Agree. For as much as I want to see byu suffer in independence, the primary reason I don't want them in the BIG XII is because I don't want their teams now recruiting athletes in Utah.
    (268 days ago, 5 stars)

My thought too-I think they will expand, but all they said is they would look into it. So there's a chance they look at the data and expansion options (do any teams actually improve their conference? No.), and keep the status quo and not expand.

Yes, appreciated by people in Britain, and even critics in the states. But not too many people have even heard of them, let alone can name one song by them.

Their debut album is one of the best of the late '80s. Now I have to go wash my hands because I agree with annarborute on something.

Changing of the Guard at the National Cemetary. Lived there for 3 years and this was my favorite.

In the law school of 550, about 30 were white, so about 5%. Undergrad? Not even close. Porbably 99.99% black.

Although I partly agree to the persecution complex (being LDS myself), their collective response has much more to do with being a TDS fan than being LDS. There are plenty of Mormons, who are fans of other schools, who would not react the same way.

Didn't Taylor kick someone while on the ground last year?

What rumors? Why would he come to Utah for one year, and sit behind Joe Williams, or at best, split carries with him? He'd be the feature back at tds.

I'm not impressed with his coaching at all. Detmer only had winning seasons the past two years. His overall record as a high school coach is 23-22. Hopefully he has the same winning percentage at TDS.

And Booker, along with Covey and Scott way less than 100%. It's not like Utah is the greatest offense, but when you are down your three best offensive players it will be a struggle.

For how frustrating he was, I'm thinking we'll be missing him next year. Hope I am wrong.
