Questions regarding bowl selection: for Pac-12 bowls, does "pac-12 #3" in a bowl only mean "third selection" or does it have something to do with standings? Also, is there a rule that a team can't play a bowl 2x in a row in the pac,or just preferred?

    by WISCyUTE

Beyond that, we will be ranked but (assuming usc loss) probably only Stan and Oregon will be ranked. Do you think a ranking is more valuable than potential offensive output for a matchup? Utah vs wisc would match 2 ranked teams but EVERYONE would expect the game to be a snore. I'm not sure what bowls usually choose (ranking or excitement).

A long drive ending with a touchdown to extend the lead, an aggressive stop / turnover, and a little drive to get the field goal to ice it. Beautiful.

A moment of silence for Chop Suey Luey's.

    by WISCyUTE
    2015-09-02 11:47:57

I was telling stories of college to a michigan alum friend who is going to the game and mentioned chop Suey Luey's. (Mostly as a warning). But google tells me it is permanently closed. Around 2001 you couldn't beat a grease bomb kung pao chicken w/ soda for $4.25 (no soda if you take it to go - the to go container was expensive).
But alas, there will be no more afternoon stomach aches from ingestion of that horrible awesomeness. A moment of silence in memoriam.

I can't believe the Utes got only a (x) seed. The Utes are (y) in the (rating system the committee probably doesn't actually use). I thought now that we were in the Pac this BS would stop.

The Utes are way better than (team seed x -1). Their ranking is only (z) in (other ranking metric). Total BS.

    Why'd Andersen leave?

    by WISCyUTE
    2014-12-11 11:49:11

    Capitol Times Article

Why'd he leave? Some tweets above have some insight. Academic standards made recruiting difficult, and Andersen was not able to pay assistants competitively. These seem most likely, especially when you are going up against Meyer at OSU without similar limits.

It's possible he just didn't fit with Madison culture. Wisconsin and Utah are stunningly different, and if you grew up in Utah, you might never get it (beer: it's not evil in Madison). I fell in love with Madison. My wife never really liked it (both of us from Utah). And it's not a matter of there not being enough to do. You can't lump Madison in with the rest of the cow towns of the Midwest. Madison is beloved...nearly all of the rest of the Midwest is not.

But why OSU? I have no idea. Unless he's happier with more reasonable expectations. Otherwise everything seems more difficult at OSU. It is an exceptionally strange choice.

So, after all is said and done with the playoff this year, will teams schedule tougher or easier non-conference teams? If your goal is getting into the playoff, I think easier games is clearly the correct answer.

    by WISCyUTE
    2014-12-06 17:09:11

Michigan State got no credit for going on the road and losing to Oregon. Instead, they were eliminated from the playoffs with their first B1G loss.
If Wisconsin hadn't gone south and lost to LSU, I think the game tonight would have been hyped as a play in game for the playoff, despite the weakness of the B1G.
Kansas State would be playing for a legit shot at the playoff tonight if they beat Baylor (if they hadn't lost to Auburn).
Yes, if you win a tough non conf game it helps a lot. But if you lose, you're screwed.
Imagine if Oregon had lost the Michigan State game and the rest of the season played out the same way. I think a 2 loss Oregon would be sitting behind both a one loss Big 12 team and Ohio State, and could easily be out of the playoffs.
It's not worth the risk of wrecking your season before it starts by scheduling tough non-conference games. (And that sucks. I love the good early non conference games.)

Select: "Settings", then select "Safari", then select "Clear cookies and data".

You'll have to login in UFN (and everything else) again, but I haven't been redirected since. Cheers.

Instant replay in college basketball is awful. I don't watch much basketball but watched the badger game last night. I stopped watching basketball for the most part because fouls and the refs play way to big of a role in the outcome.

    by WISCyUTE
    2014-03-30 11:03:04

Instant replay only emphasizes that problem. The reviews took forever and it's just not fun to sit and wait. Am I in the minority on this? I like getting calls right but don't need to spend five minutes to see if nick Johnson got elbowed in the face on purpose.

Regarding RPI, BPI and other ranking systems. Does the selection committee officially use RPI and not any of the others? The RPI is lousy but the Utes would maybe be a tourney team based on the other systems.

    Gigapixel panorama: awesome voodoo techmology.

    by WISCyUTE
    2013-09-06 07:27:27

I finally looked up HoopUte and his doppelganger in the panorama (link at top of Utefans page, he's at section 34 portal). Pretty fantastic.

Anyone with particular insight into how this panorama is made? I guess they take a ton of overlapping, super hi res photos, and then have an algorithm that stitches them together in a way that the seams are not noticeable.

Looks like the cop's leg between the two HoopUtes may have been a victim to this stitching- his left leg appears to have a bite taken out of it. I bet there are other glitches that snuck in but overall they did a fantastic job.

I think the response in Boston on Friday was way over-the-top. The entire city should not have been shut down for this guy. Should they really have the authority to institute martial law? What does a house-to-house search really mean (warrant?)?

    by WISCyUTE
    2013-04-22 07:01:43

I couldn't believe the photos I saw of SWAT (or similar) taking up tactical positions in backyards. I especially can't believe an entire US city was shut down (estimated cost of a third of a billion dollars).

This is exactly what terrorists want. To make us afraid and to disrupt our ability to live our lives. That clearly happened on Friday in Boston, and it didn't need to. The authorities overstepped their bounds.

    2013-02-08 10:12:12

If I pick a card out of a 52 card deck at random, put it back, pick another random card, put it back and keep repeating, what is the most likely number of unique cards that I will have picked at least once after 1000 draws (any guesses?)? What is the probability of picking exactly 48 unique cards at least once? What is the probability of picking all 52 cards at least once? What is the probability that anyone bothers to respond?

Note: there is no joke or punchline here- I am puzzling over a similar question for work and haven’t been able to find the correct equation. Cheers.

Just got an invite to the U of U Deans Unscripted tour in DC. Anyone been to such a thing (anywhere, I suppose)?

    by WISCyUTE
    2012-01-13 13:42:28

Sounds interesting in general, but I have especially been looking to extend my network. I am a postdoc at the National Institutes of Health and am looking to transition to the biotech industry in the DC area. I'm having trouble since I don't really know anyone in biotech. Think the deans tour might have useful contacts? LinkedIn has so far failed me at identifying relevant U of U grads in the area.

Also, business attire required... to me that suggests that as a 31 year-old I might be the youngest person there... but that could be the scientist in me- we don't generally dress up .

What happened to turn the game around?

    by WISCyUTE
    2011-09-20 07:40:23

There was a point during the second quarter when things looked really bad. The defense had given up yards, and despite the turnovers we were losing 10-7. Heaps looked excellent on a couple of series and we didn't appear to be able to reach the QB or cover the receivers. Perhaps most distressing, our offense was anemic at best. Some in the chat room were ready to give up on the game (and season).

What changed during the rest of the game? What did the team do differently to turn it into a blowout?

Hoping for some car help. My car just mostly broke down... I just got a new Johnson rod so I don't think it's that.

    by WISCyUTE
    2011-08-21 14:40:28

So my '99 mitsubishi diamante just broke down. As I was driving some electrical-related things started to happen over a couple of miles: battery light stayed on, parking brake/gas/SRS lights all came on, electric window only went up/down very slowly, RPM meter started jumping up and down although the engine didn't rev, wipers moved super slow, AC also had an error. I turned off the headlights and the RPM problem got a bit better but still was messed up. Brakes started being really jerky (power brakes shutting down?). I pulled into a parking spot and the car finally stalled and I haven't tried to restart.

Any diagnoses? Will dealer be required or any mechanic (note: I am in Annapolis MD)?

To add to the mystery, the car has had very minor electrical issues for quite some time- battery drains easily, battery light comes on for about 5 min upon starting but turns off once the car gets going. Mechanic couldn't find anything wrong. I got the car washed this morning and minutes afterward the AC problem started. I drove about 5 minutes, the car sat for about 4 hours, then when I tried to drive home all the above mentioned stuff happened. Did the car wash maybe get something wet that might dry out (I hope I hope)?

I'm watching the Rose Bowl on ESPN3 (aka 360) online. Anyone know what the business plan there is?

    by WISCyUTE
    2011-01-01 16:49:51

I don't have cable but have internet. There isn't another game on, so I don't understand why ESPN would show the Rose Bowl for free. Free games online makes more sense when there are multiple games on at once like during the rest of the year, so you can see out of market games. The feed is excellent, AND most of the commercials are gone. What gives? Is ESPN preparing for an online subscription service? Why no commercials? Oh, and ON WISCONSIN!

(if you missed the threads below, the tuesday after a road game the bookstore offers 5% off insignia items for every touchdown the utes score (up to 25% off). someone tried the promo code a couple hours ago and it did not work, but I was able to get 25% off my order at checkout a couple minutes ago.)

If the Mt. West and WAC want respect they should recognize that their conference schedule is garbage. Or you could play Louisville, Utah St. and SJSU then wonder why no one takes you seriously. Congrats on the TCU win, try playing UF, UGA, and Bama week-in and week-out instead of once a year when it's the biggest game in your history while your opponent is disappointed to be there. Play LSU week 1. See how that goes.

I personally think a four-team playoff is all that is needed...

    by WISCyUTE
    2009-07-10 13:46:16

To determine a national champion, I suggest a four team playoff of the four top-ranked teams (according to BCS-type standings, polls, whatever), with the significant exception that ALL undefeated teams are involved regardless of ranking. An undefeated team not ranked in the top four would replace the fourth ranked team (or in the case of 2008, BSU and Utah would replace the third and fourth ranked team, or have to play each other first to see who gets the spot). This way, no team could finish the year undefeated unless they are the champion. Every team would start the season knowing that they have a shot at the national title, unlike the current BCS.

Obviously this is similar to the “plus-1” model, but the plus-1 model would leave out an undefeated non-AQ team if they don’t start out ranked high enough (e.g. Utah and Auburn 2004 season). To me, this plan would also largely preserve the bowl system and importance of the regular season, which I think a 16-team playoff would destroy, and not be unduly taxing on the student athletes or traveling fans.
(apologies if I am inadvertently ripping off someone else’s plan)

VERY lucky we have stanford at home only. Our final game at Washington may be hugely important in terms of who wins the conference.

You're not crazy. I'll drink diet coke from a bottle but not a can. And it's better from a fountain. And diet Pepsi is better.

Whilst I'm all for this kind of righteous indignation, I think I remember there being a close-to-reasonable explanation. Maybe events close by in time that they were worried would be disrupted?

I used to find this frustrating but Mom and Pop stores are getting crushed by mega corps that can negotiate much better credit card fee deals. They need all the help they can get , I happily dig up cash now.

You think if Sean Mannion had suddenly been our quarterback we'd be in the playoff? I say nay.

How I fixed the UFN pop up redirect problem (iphone 5 with safari):
    (417 days ago, 0 stars)

That article is a year old though and it's author (Rittenberg) is one of the ones that said assistant pay was an issue. I read UW currently 9th in B1G.

I think Urban Meyer could have done the same thing with our QBs. Holy $#!+ is he a great coach.
    (426 days ago, 1 stars)

Yeah. If you have a tough non conf you can at least determine your own destiny by winning versus a really hard schedule. It just doesn't seem worth it: too easy to lose weird games at the beginning of the year.
    (426 days ago, 1 stars)

So, after all is said and done with the playoff this year, will teams schedule tougher or easier non-conference teams? If your goal is getting into the playoff, I think easier games is clearly the correct answer.

PSA: How I fixed the UFN pop up redirect problem (iphone 5 with safari):
    (427 days ago, 5 stars)

Could it be the version? I'm running OS 7.1.2 on iphone 5. I also get redirected on ipad 2 (old version of software).
    (433 days ago, 0 stars)

I use safari on iPhone 5. I am constantly redirected. You?

Poeltltl's stats: no fouls but also no blocks. Seems exceptionally weird for a big man. I didn't watch the game- any thoughts on his defense? Did he disrupt stuff near the basket, just somehow without fouls/blocks? Or did his defense seem sub-par?

Did I hear right? Are the Utes really 7 point underdogs to Stanford?

I've been trying to pick up a first programming language. I dabbled in perl, then Python, then Matlab. Nothing really stuck, maybe mostly because programming isn't my job and I don't have an explicit goal. Any recommendations on how to get started?

Questions regarding bowl selection: for Pac-12 bowls, does "pac-12 #3" in a bowl only mean "third selection" or does it have something to do with standings? Also, is there a rule that a team can't play a bowl 2x in a row in the pac,or just preferred? (393)
